Ypres, War Graves & Last Post via tunnel

Ypres, War Graves & Last Post via tunnel

Visit Hill 62 -sanctuary wood (entrance charge - not included), Essex Farm, Tyne cot, Vancouver Corner, Langemark, some free time in Ypres town & Last Post service at 20:00 hrs

Ypres is a small Flemish market town just over the border from France and quite similar to many towns in Belgium, that was until 1914 (the outbreak of the First World War). English-speaking soldiers in that war often referred to Ypres by the (perhaps humorous) mispronunciation 'Wipers'. British soldiers even self-published a wartime newspaper called the 'Wipers Times. Ypres was a key position during World War I because it stood in the path of Germany's planned sweep across the rest of Belgium and into France from the North. The German army formed a salient around the city, bombarding it from nearly all sides throughout much of the war. To counterattack, British, French and allied forces made costly advances from the town of Ypres into the German lines on the surrounding hills. The Last Post (performed by a team of local buglers) is sounded at the Menin Gate memorial every night and in all weathers. Ypres these days has the title of 'city of peace'.
